Unique Materials.
The topic today is Materials.
First of all, Material is a broad term for a chemical
substance or mixture of substances that constitute a thing.
In the metaphysical sense, materials can be anything
something else is consisting of, whether pure or impure, a singular composite
or a complex mix, living or non-living matter, whether natural or man-made,
either concrete or abstract. We all know about materials. They are selected on the
basis of their properties and strength. Because of recent breakthroughs in the
field of science, new materials are invented. The earth is also itself one type
of material and on earth there are many material which are classified by their
properties.
The 4 types of materials having unique properties are:-
1) Liquid glass
2) Starlite
3) DMSO
4) Pykrete
You may have heard about some of the above mentioned names.
But let’s get into details,
Liquid glass
Properties:
·
Ultra thin layer
·
Eco friendly as it is made up of sand or quartz
·
Protects from the oil, moisture, dirt, bacteria
and gives surface an unequaled abrasion resistance
·
Less surface tension
·
The liquid glass is 200% flexible making it suitable
for both soft and hard material
·
This coating does not change the properties of
the coated material
Use
·
Mainly used for the surface protection
·
Coating is transparent and easily cleaned by the
water
·
Car windscreen is also coated with the liquid
glass coating
·
They are mostly useful for the screen coating of
the multimedia devices
Starlite
This is new for you all, invented by amateur
chemist and hairdresser Maurice ward.
Properties:
·
High thermal conductivity
·
It can also withstand the temperature created by the LASER beam (10000
c)
Info
·
An interesting video about this material can be
found on
Uses
·
No use. This sounds tricky but has an
interesting story. The inventor of starlite ward was sensible and scared of
losing control and rights to the material as NASA tried to get the information
about this material. This kind of material has great demand in outer space. But
the inventor refused to give a sample piece and took the secret with him when
he died.
·
From the information, Starlite was in the powder
form. So it was difficult to handle it and the coating was not sticking
properly on the parts.
·
To solve this problem, PVA glue (poly vinyl acetate)
must be added. But in contrast, this type of mixture has very small life span.
So now, this material is a dream that should be converted into reality in the
near future.
DMSO
DMSO is abbreviation for dimethyl
sulfoxide.
Chemical Formula: - (CH3)2SO
Properties
- · Hazardous for the lungs.
- · It creates lung irritation
- · Also harmful for the eyes. So it should not have direct contact with eyes.
- · So this is totally harmful for human beings.
- · Boiling point is 189 C
Uses:
- · As it is harmful for human body, it is mainly used for solvents.
- · It is also used in the biochemistry and cell biology
- · They are used in polymerase chain reaction
- · To inhibit secondary structure in the DNA template
- · Also used in medicine due to its inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Pykrete
This material concept was given by Geoffrey
Pyke, working for the British military.
Pykrete is the mixture of water and wood
pulp powder or paper pulp.
Uses
- · They are mainly used in the dome at the Polar Regions where ice is at its peak.
- · This is solid and has tendency to resist the heat transfer
- · It is also used for light-weight bullet-proof material.
